Horam

Horam, king of Gezer, was defeated and killed by Joshua during the conquest of Canaan when he attempted to aid the city of Lachish. His defeat demonstrated God's continued faithfulness in giving Israel victory over the pagan nations.

Overview

Horam was a Canaanite king who ruled Gezer during the time of Joshua's conquest. When the people of Lachish were under siege by Joshua's forces, Horam mobilized his army to provide military support, but he was defeated and killed in battle. This event illustrates God's sovereign power in establishing Israel in the Promised Land.

Key Scriptures

"When Horam king of Gezer heard that Joshua had taken Ai and had devoted it to destruction, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, he feared greatly. So Horam king of Gezer went up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining to him" (Joshua 10:33, ESV).

"The Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, and they struck them and chased them as far as Greater Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of Mizpeh" (Joshua 11:8, ESV).

Application

Remember that resistance to God's purposes ultimately fails, and trust in His sovereignty as He directs the course of history and establishes His kingdom.
