Hireling

A hireling is a hired shepherd who lacks genuine care for the flock and abandons sheep when danger comes, contrasting with the true shepherd who lays down his life for them. This biblical concept illustrates the difference between those who serve Christ genuinely versus those who serve only for personal gain.

Overview

Jesus contrasts the true shepherd with the hireling in John 10. The hireling cares nothing for the sheep and flees when a wolf attacks because they are not his own and he receives wages, not love. This illustrates spiritual leadership that is self-serving rather than sacrificial.

Key Scriptures

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep" (John 10:11-13, ESV).

"Now I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I delivered them to you" (1 Corinthians 11:2, ESV)—emphasizing faithful spiritual leadership.

Application

Evaluate whether your spiritual leaders demonstrate sacrificial love for the flock or merely professional obligation, and ensure you yourself serve Christ from genuine love rather than selfish motivation.
