Hashabniah

Hashabniah appears in Nehemiah's account as a leader who participated in sealing the covenant to obey God's law during the post-exilic restoration of Jerusalem.

Overview

Hashabniah is mentioned in Nehemiah 10:25 as one of the Levites and leaders who sealed the covenant renewal under Nehemiah's leadership after the wall of Jerusalem was rebuilt. This covenant represented the people's commitment to follow God's law and separate themselves from foreign influences that had compromised their faith during exile.

Key Scriptures

"Now those who sealed were: Nehemiah the governor, the son of Hacaliah, and Zedekiah" (Nehemiah 10:1, ESV). "And the Levites: Jeshua the son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel" (Nehemiah 10:9, ESV). "Hashabniah, Shebaniah, Hodijah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan" (Nehemiah 10:25, ESV).

Application

Hashabniah's example encourages believers to publicly commit themselves to obedience of God's Word and to join with others in covenantal faithfulness to the Lord.
