Overview
Hashabnah appears in Nehemiah 10 as one of the leaders of Israel who sealed the covenant of restoration after the people's return from Babylonian exile. His name means 'the Lord has reckoned' or 'the Lord has accounted,' reflecting a faith-oriented identity. He joined other leaders in publicly binding themselves and the nation to obey God's Law and maintain proper worship practices.
Key Scriptures
"Now those who sealed it were: Nehemiah the governor... Seraiah, Azariah, Jeremiah, Pashhur, Amariah, Malchijah, Hattush, Shebaniah, Malluch, Harim, Meremoth, Obadiah, Daniel, Ginnethon, Baruch, Mesullam, Abijah, Mijamin, Maaziah, Bilgai, and Shemaiah—these were the priests. And the Levites: Jeshua son of Azaniah, Binnui of the sons of Henadad, Kadmiel; and their associates: Shebaniah, Hodiah, Kelita, Pelaiah, Hanan, Mica, Rehob, Hashabnah" (Nehemiah 10:1, 8-9, ESV).
