Overview
Haran was born to Terah and lived in Ur of the Chaldeans. He fathered Lot before dying in his homeland, leaving his son to be raised by his brother Abraham. Though Haran lived only a short time, his descendants became significant in Scripture's narrative.
Key Scriptures
"Terah lived 70 years and fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran" (Genesis 11:26, ESV). "This is the account of Terah's family line. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran fathered Lot. While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans" (Genesis 11:27-28, NIV). "Abram and Nahor both took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah" (Genesis 11:29, ESV).
Application
Haran's brief life reminds us that God's purposes continue through generations, and even those who don't live to see God's promises fulfilled play important roles in His unfolding plan.
