Overview
Hammoth-Dor (also called Hammath) was one of the forty-eight cities given to the Levites under the Mosaic Law. Located in the territory of Naphtali in northern Israel, it functioned as both a residential city for priests and one of Israel's cities of refuge where those accused of unintentional manslaughter could find safety.
Key Scriptures
"From the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee, Hammoth-dor, and Kartan, together with their pasturelands—three cities" (1 Chronicles 6:76, ESV).
"These were all the cities of the Levites within the possession of the people of Israel: forty-eight cities in all, with their pasturelands" (Joshua 21:41, ESV).
"That the slayer who kills any person without intent or unintentionally may flee there" (Numbers 35:11, ESV).
Application
The establishment of cities of refuge demonstrates God's provision for justice, mercy, and the protection of the innocent under His law—reflecting principles of fairness that Christians should uphold today.
