Gossip

Gossip is destructive speech that damages relationships and violates biblical commands to love our neighbors. Scripture consistently warns against gossip as sin and calls believers to speak truthfully and edifyingly.

Overview

Gossip involves spreading rumor or private information about others, often under the guise of concern or prayer. The Bible treats gossip seriously, recognizing it as divisive, harmful, and contrary to God's character and our calling as His children.

Key Scriptures

"A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends" (Proverbs 16:28, NIV). "The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to the inmost parts of a person" (Proverbs 18:8, NIV). "Do not go about spreading slander among your people" (Leviticus 19:16, NIV). "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice" (Ephesians 4:31, ESV).

Application

Before speaking about someone, ask yourself: Is it true, necessary, and kind? If information isn't yours to share or would damage another's reputation, remain silent and redirect conversations toward edifying speech.
