Overview
Goshen was a region in northeastern Egypt where Jacob and his descendants settled during the famine (Genesis 46:28-34). God sovereignly preserved Israel there for 430 years while they multiplied into a great nation. When the time of deliverance came, God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt, crossing the Red Sea and returning to the Promised Land.
Key Scriptures
"So Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of Goshen" (Genesis 47:27, ESV). "Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years" (Exodus 12:40, NIV). "Then Moses said, 'This is what the Lord says: About midnight I will go throughout Egypt. Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the slave girl, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well'" (Exodus 11:4-5, NIV).
