Overview
Geshem the Arabian was a regional leader who strongly opposed Nehemiah's rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls. Along with Sanballat and Tobiah, he used intimidation tactics, false rumors, and invitations to meetings designed to distract Nehemiah from completing the work God had called him to do. Despite these threats, Nehemiah remained focused on his mission.
Key Scriptures
"Now when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem the Arab heard that I had built the wall... they sent to me saying, 'Come, let us meet together'" (Nehemiah 6:1-2, ESV).
Nehemiah responded with faith: "I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?" (Nehemiah 6:3, ESV).
When intimidation failed, Geshem spread false rumors: "It is reported among the nations...that you are about to rebel" (Nehemiah 6:6, ESV).
Application
When pursuing God's calling, expect opposition and resist the temptation to be distracted by critics; maintain focus on obedience to God's work regardless of external pressure.
