Gebal

Gebal (modern Byblos, Lebanon) was an ancient Phoenician city known for its timber trade and religious significance in biblical times. Though not a major focus of Scripture, Gebal appears in references to commerce and God's sovereignty over nations.

Overview

Gebal was a prominent port city in ancient Phoenicia, located on the Mediterranean coast in what is now Lebanon. The city was famous for supplying cedar timber for the Jerusalem temple and other construction projects. Scripture mentions Gebal primarily in contexts of trade and as evidence of God's dominion over all earthly kingdoms.

Key Scriptures

"The elders of Gebal and her wise men were in you, making your seams; All the ships of the sea and their oarsmen were in you To deal in your merchandise." (Ezekiel 27:9, NASB)

"Praise the Lord from the earth... Let them praise the name of the Lord, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven." (Psalm 148:7, 13, NASB) — reflecting God's authority over all nations including Gebal.

Application

Remember that God's sovereignty extends over all earthly powers and commerce, calling believers to trust Him rather than earthly wealth and human achievement.
