Frontlets

Frontlets were small boxes worn on the forehead as a physical reminder to keep God's commands always in mind and heart. They symbolized the Israelites' commitment to obey God's law and teach it to their children.

Overview

God commanded the Israelites to bind His words as frontlets between their eyes, making His laws a constant, visible reminder. This practice emerged from the commands given at Passover and reinforced through the Shema prayer. The frontlets served as physical symbols of covenant loyalty and spiritual devotion.

Key Scriptures

"And it shall be to you as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of the Lord may be in your mouth" (Exodus 13:9, ESV).

"You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets on your forehead" (Deuteronomy 6:8, ESV).

"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might" (Deuteronomy 6:4, ESV).

Application

While we no longer wear physical frontlets, believers should cultivate spiritual disciplines that keep God's Word continuously before us, guiding our thoughts, decisions, and daily conduct.
