Overview
Fetters appear throughout Scripture as literal restraints placed on prisoners and captives. Beyond their physical application, fetters symbolize the spiritual chains of sin, bondage, and oppression from which only Christ can liberate us. The Bible consistently presents freedom from these bonds as part of God's redemptive work.
Key Scriptures
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed" (Luke 4:18, ESV).
"Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison" (Acts 12:5-6, ESV).
"Therefore if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36, NASB).
Application
Recognize that genuine freedom comes through faith in Christ alone, who breaks the chains of sin and transforms captives into His liberated children.
