Ezem

Ezem (also spelled Anem) was a Levitical city in the territory of Issachar, designated as a city of refuge where the innocent could flee from avengers of blood.

Overview

Ezem was one of the forty-eight Levitical cities appointed by God for the priests and Levites throughout Israel's tribal territories. As a city of refuge, it provided protection for those who committed unintentional manslaughter, preventing blood vengeance until their case could be judged fairly before the congregation.

Key Scriptures

"And out of the tribe of Issachar, Kedesh with its pasture lands, Daberath with its pasture lands, Ramoth with its pasture lands, and Anem with its pasture lands—four cities" (1 Chronicles 6:73, ESV).

"If anyone kills a person, the murderer shall be put to death on the evidence of witnesses. But no person shall be put to death on the testimony of one witness" (Numbers 35:30, ESV).

Application

Ezem reminds us that God's design includes both justice and mercy—providing refuge for the innocent while ensuring due process protects the vulnerable.
