Evidence

Biblical evidence requires multiple witnesses and careful examination to establish truth and protect the innocent from false accusations. God's law emphasizes both the reliability of testimony and the serious consequences for those who bear false witness.

Overview

The Old Testament law establishes clear standards for evidence in legal proceedings, requiring at least two or three witnesses to establish a matter (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15). God's design protects both the accused and the integrity of justice by preventing conviction based on a single testimony. When false witnesses are discovered, they face the same penalty they sought to inflict on the accused.

Key Scriptures

"On the evidence of two witnesses or three witnesses, he who is to die shall be put to death; he shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness" (Deuteronomy 17:6, NASB).

"If a malicious witness rises up against a man to accuse him of wrongdoing, then both men who have the dispute shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days" (Deuteronomy 19:16-17, NASB).

"Then you shall do to him just as he intended to do to his brother" (Deuteronomy 19:19, NASB).

Application

When evaluating claims or accusations, seek multiple credible witnesses and examine evidence carefully before reaching judgment.
