Overview
En-Rogel (also called the Well of Job or Jacob's Well) was a natural spring located in the Kidron Valley south of Jerusalem, near where the Kidron and Hinnom valleys meet. It served as a crucial water source and landmark throughout Israel's history, featuring prominently in accounts of David's reign and the transition to Solomon's rule.
Key Scriptures
"Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, 'I will be king.' And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. And David his father had never at any time displeased him by asking, 'Why have you done thus and so?'" (1 Kings 1:5, ESV). David's son Jonathan brought news to Adonijah at En-Rogel: "Now Adonijah feared Solomon; and he arose and went and caught hold of the horns of the altar" (1 Kings 1:50, ESV).
Application
En-Rogel reminds us that God's sovereign purposes for leadership are accomplished through His chosen vessels, not through human scheming or self-promotion.
