Overview
After the Babylonian captivity (586 BC), God raised up King Cyrus of Persia to release the Jewish exiles, allowing them to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. This restoration occurred in waves over several decades and fulfilled prophetic promises made through Jeremiah and other prophets, demonstrating God's covenant faithfulness to His people despite their disobedience.
Key Scriptures
"In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia so that he made a proclamation" (2 Chronicles 36:22, ESV).
"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah 29:11, ESV).
