The Meaning of Earnest
The Greek word arrab?n, translated as "earnest" or "deposit" in English Bibles, carries the beautiful image of a down payment—a partial gift given in advance to guarantee the completion of a transaction. When we buy a home or enter into a significant agreement, we often place money down to show good faith and secure our commitment. This is precisely what an earnest is: a binding promise of what is to come.
In the New Testament, Paul uses this commercial language to describe something far more precious than any earthly transaction. In 2 Corinthians 1:22, he writes that God "has also sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee." Notice the progression: we hear the gospel, we believe, we receive the Holy Spirit as a seal and deposit, and this guarantees our future inheritance. The redemption that is to come—our complete transformation, glorification, and eternal life in God's presence—is absolutely secured by this earnest. God is not making vague promises; He has already given us the first installment. The Spirit's presence in our lives today is tangible proof that everything God has said about our future is absolutely certain.
Living in the Assurance of the Earnest

The earnest is not earned by our goodness or maintained by our strength—it is God's gift and God's commitment.
