What Scripture Says About Divination
The Bible clearly prohibits divination in numerous passages, revealing God's heart on this matter. In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Moses lists divination among practices that are "detestable to the Lord," distinguishing God's people from surrounding nations that relied on diviners and mediums. The Lord then offers something far better—a prophet like Moses through whom His people would hear His word directly (Deuteronomy 18:15). This isn't arbitrary restriction; it reflects God's desire for His people to depend on Him rather than on hidden knowledge obtained through occultic practices.
King Saul's tragic encounter with a medium at Endor (1 Samuel 28) illustrates the spiritual danger of seeking divination. In desperation before battle, Saul visited a medium to contact the dead prophet Samuel. Rather than receiving comfort, Saul heard a message of doom—God had departed from him. His pursuit of divination revealed a heart that had abandoned trust in the Lord, and it precipitated his downfall. The account serves as a sobering reminder that divination leads us away from God's truth, not toward it.
The Apostle Paul encountered a slave girl with "a spirit of divination" in Philippi (Acts 16:16-18). Though her predictions about Paul and Silas were technically accurate, Paul recognized the demonic source and cast out the spirit. This demonstrates that even apparently helpful divination comes from the enemy and contradicts the gospel. True guidance comes through God's Word and His Holy Spirit, not through mystical means.
The Deeper Issue: Trust and Revelation
Divination fundamentally represents a failure to trust God's sufficiency. When we seek to peer behind the curtain of the future through tarot cards, horoscopes, mediums, or other divination practices, we're essentially saying that God's revealed Word and His promises aren't enough. We're looking for shortcuts to wisdom that only God can provide. Proverbs 3:5-6 calls us to "trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
God has given us everything necessary for life and godliness through Christ and Scripture (2 Peter 1:3). He invites us to bring our anxieties to Him in prayer, knowing He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). This is incompatible with seeking secret knowledge through divination. The Holy Spirit guides believers into truth (John 16:13) far more reliably than any diviner ever could.
Finding True Guidance
If you've been drawn to divination, know that God offers something infinitely better. Replace the quest for hidden knowledge with dependence on Scripture, prayer, wise counsel from mature believers, and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit. When facing uncertainty, remember that God doesn't hide His will from those who genuinely seek Him. He desires to guide us more than we desire guidance.
Trust Him today with your future, whatever unknowns lie ahead. His faithfulness is more reliable than any prediction, and His love is more certain than any promise divination could offer.
"When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?" — Isaiah 8:19
