The Nature of God's Counsels
The counsels and purposes of God refer to His deliberate, eternal plans and designs that govern all creation and human history. Unlike human counsel, which is often incomplete or mistaken, God's counsels are perfect, immutable, and comprehensive. In Isaiah 46:10, the Lord declares, "I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come." This remarkable statement assures us that God sees all of history at once and has established a plan that encompasses every detail from eternity past to eternity future.
The apostle Paul celebrates this truth in Ephesians 1:9-10, where he writes that God has made known to us "the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment." God's purposes are not reactive or improvised; they are part of a grand design established before the foundation of the world. This is deeply comforting to believers who sometimes feel that circumstances are spinning out of control. Behind every event, God's sovereign plan continues to unfold with perfect precision.
God's Purposes Centered on Christ and Redemption
At the heart of God's counsels stands His plan of redemption through Jesus Christ. Before time began, God purposed to redeem humanity through His Son's sacrifice. Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 1:9-10 that God "has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done, but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time." This eternal perspective transforms how we understand salvation—it is not an afterthought or Plan B, but the centerpiece of God's cosmic design.
Furthermore, God's purposes extend beyond individual salvation to the restoration of all things. Revelation 21:1-5 describes the new heaven and new earth, where God will dwell with His people and "will wipe every tear from their eyes." This ultimate purpose gives Christians confidence that history is moving toward a glorious consummation, not toward chaos or meaninglessness.
Living in Light of God's Counsels
Understanding God's counsels invites us to surrender our own anxious planning to His perfect wisdom. Proverbs 19:21 states, "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." This doesn't mean we shouldn't make wise decisions or set goals; rather, it means holding our plans loosely, recognizing that God's purposes supersede our own. When we encounter unexpected circumstances or disappointments, we can trust that God's counsel remains intact and is working toward our ultimate good.
As Canadian Christians, we are invited to participate in God's purposes through faithful obedience, prayer, and service. When we align our hearts with His counsels—seeking His kingdom first, serving others, and sharing the Gospel—we become instruments of His eternal plan. This brings deep meaning to our daily lives and connects our small acts of faithfulness to God's grand, unfolding purposes.
