The Counsellor in Scripture
The term "Counsellor" appears prominently in Jesus's farewell discourse recorded in the Gospel of John, where He promises His disciples that He will send "another Counsellor" after His ascension. In John 14:16-17, Jesus declares, "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth." The original Greek word is "parakletos," which means "one called alongside" or "advocate"—someone who stands with us in our need. This beautiful promise assures us that even though Jesus would physically depart, His presence would continue through the Holy Spirit's indwelling ministry.
Throughout John 14-16, Jesus expands on the Counsellor's specific functions. In John 14:26, He explains that the Counsellor "will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." The Holy Spirit serves as our divine teacher, illuminating Scripture and deepening our understanding of God's truth. Furthermore, in John 16:7-11, Jesus emphasizes that the Counsellor will "convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment." This convicting work is essential both for bringing unbelievers to repentance and for sanctifying believers, helping us grow in holiness and align our lives with God's standards.
The comforting dimension of the Counsellor's work cannot be overlooked. The word "parakletos" also carries the sense of comfort and encouragement. In Romans 8:26-27, Paul describes how "the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express," demonstrating the Counsellor's compassionate advocacy on our behalf before God the Father. This intimate work of the Spirit reminds us that we are never alone in our struggles, fears, or sorrows.
The Counsellor's Ongoing Ministry
The Counsellor's work extends far beyond the apostolic age. Every believer who has trusted Christ receives the gift of the Holy Spirit as their personal Counsellor. In 1 John 2:27, John assures us, "As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him." This does not diminish the value of pastoral teaching or biblical instruction, but rather affirms that the Spirit works through these means to guide us into truth.
Additionally, the Counsellor grants us spiritual power for living. In Acts 1:8, Jesus promises that "you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you," equipping believers to be witnesses and to overcome temptation. This power is practical and transformative, enabling us to walk in victory and usefulness for God's kingdom.
Receiving and Responding to the Counsellor
As Canadian believers, we can draw tremendous encouragement from knowing that the Counsellor is available to us moment by moment. When facing difficult decisions, relational conflicts, or seasons of doubt, we are invited to seek the Holy Spirit's guidance through prayer, Scripture meditation, and obedient listening. The Counsellor speaks to our hearts, guides our paths, and empowers our witness. Our responsibility is to remain sensitive to His leading, to grieve not the Spirit through disobedience, and to yield to His transforming work in our lives.
