The Cornerstone in Scripture
Throughout Scripture, the cornerstone represents the most critical stone in a building's foundation—the stone upon which all other stones are laid and aligned. This physical reality became a powerful spiritual metaphor in biblical teaching. In 1 Peter 2:6, we read: "For in Scripture it says: 'See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.'" Peter is declaring that Jesus Christ himself is this cornerstone, the foundation upon which God's entire redemptive purpose stands. This passage draws from Isaiah 28:16, where the prophet foretold this precious stone that God would place in Zion.
The cornerstone's significance appears prominently in Psalm 118:22, which Jesus himself referenced: "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." This prophecy pointed to Christ's rejection by the religious establishment of His day, yet His ultimate exaltation as the foundation of God's kingdom. In Matthew 21:42, Jesus applied this very passage to Himself, challenging His disciples to understand that what the world rejects, God elevates to the place of supreme importance. The cornerstone, though initially refused, becomes indispensable.
Christ as Our Foundation
The apostle Paul builds upon this imagery in Ephesians 2:20, describing the Church as "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone." Here we see that while apostolic teaching and prophetic revelation matter, Christ remains the primary foundation. Everything in Christian faith and practice must align with Him, just as every stone in a building must align with the cornerstone. This means our doctrine, our ethics, our worship, and our mission must all be measured against who Jesus is and what He accomplished.
Understanding Christ as the cornerstone provides security and stability to our faith. In a world of shifting values and uncertain foundations, believers can stand firm knowing that our faith rests upon Christ—the one who conquered sin and death, who rose on the third day, and who sits at the right hand of God. This is not a fragile or temporary foundation, but one proven throughout two thousand years of Church history.
Living with the Cornerstone
As Canadian believers, we live in an increasingly secular culture that questions traditional foundations. Yet the cornerstone of our faith remains unmoved and unmovable. When we build our lives upon Christ—aligning our decisions, relationships, and priorities with His teachings—we experience the stability and purpose He promises. This means regularly returning to the Gospel, studying God's Word, and allowing Christ to reorient our lives.
The cornerstone also calls us to recognize our interconnectedness as a Church. Just as stones in a building support one another through their connection to the cornerstone, so believers support one another through our shared faith in Christ. Whether you're in Vancouver, Toronto, or anywhere in between, you're part of this living structure built upon Jesus. Trust Him completely, and help others discover the security found only in Christ, our eternal cornerstone.
