Chickens

Chickens appear in Scripture as humble creatures, most memorably in Jesus's rebuke of Peter and His lament over Jerusalem, teaching us about protection, denial, and divine love.

Chickens in Scripture

While chickens are not extensively featured in the Bible, they appear at pivotal spiritual moments that reveal God's character and our human frailty. The most poignant reference occurs in the Gospels when Jesus predicts Peter's denial. In Matthew 26:34, Jesus tells Peter, "Truly I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." This prediction becomes one of the most humbling moments in all of Scripture, as Peter—the rock upon which Christ would build His church—denies even knowing Jesus three times before the rooster's crow reminds him of his weakness and Christ's perfect knowledge (John 13:38).

The crowing of the rooster thus becomes a symbol of conviction and grace in the Gospel accounts. All four Gospels record this event (Matthew 26:34, Mark 14:30, Luke 22:34, John 13:38), emphasizing its spiritual significance. The rooster's crow serves as God's gentle alarm clock, awakening Peter to his failure and ultimately to restoration. Later, in John 21, we find Peter fully restored by the risen Jesus, who asks him three times if he loves Him—mirroring and healing the three denials.

Jesus's Protective Love

Beyond Peter's denial, Jesus uses chickens as a metaphor for His protective love toward Jerusalem. In Matthew 23:37, Jesus expresses profound sorrow over the city: "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing." This beautiful image reveals Christ's tender desire to shelter His people, using the humble chicken as a picture of vulnerability and maternal care.

The image of a hen gathering her chicks is one of Scripture's most touching metaphors for divine protection. Just as a mother hen instinctively draws her chicks close and shields them from danger, Jesus wants to protect Jerusalem's inhabitants. Yet the people's resistance and rejection prevented this gathering. Luke 13:34 repeats this same lament, underscoring the depth of Christ's longing to protect His people and the tragedy when that protection is refused.

Application for Our Lives Today

What do chickens teach Canadian believers today? First, Peter's denial reminds us of our own capacity for spiritual weakness. We are all vulnerable to denying Christ through our words, actions, or silence. Yet like Peter, we serve a Savior who restores the fallen and offers endless grace. When we fail—and we will—we can approach the throne of grace knowing that our Lord already knew our weakness and loved us anyway.

Second, the image of the hen gathering her chicks invites us into deeper trust. Jesus longs to gather us under His protective wings (Psalm 91:4). In our Canadian winter storms and life's uncertainties, we can find comfort knowing that Christ offers refuge. May we respond to His call and willingly gather beneath His care, unlike Jerusalem's stubborn resistance.
