The Physical Builder in Scripture
Throughout the Bible, builders held important roles in God's plan. In Exodus 35:30-32, we see how God called Bezalel and Oholiab to oversee the construction of the Tabernacle, giving them skill and wisdom for their work. These weren't merely secular craftsmen; they were gifted by God's Spirit for sacred purposes. Similarly, in 1 Kings 5-6, King Solomon employed thousands of builders, stonecutters, and workers to construct the magnificent Temple in Jerusalem. The Bible records that the Temple builders worked with precision and devotion, understanding they were building a house for the Lord.
The calling of a builder was dignified work in ancient Israel. Nehemiah, though raised in the Persian court, became a builder when he led the reconstruction of Jerusalem's walls (Nehemiah 2-6). His work required courage, faith, and perseverance against opposition. The physical act of building—laying stone upon stone, creating structures that would endure—reflected God's creative nature and our role as His stewards in the world.
The Spiritual Builder
Beyond literal construction, Scripture uses the image of building metaphorically for spiritual work. In 1 Corinthians 3:9-10, Paul writes, "For we are co-workers in God's service; you are God's field, God's building. By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it." Paul understood his apostolic ministry as laying a spiritual foundation in Christ upon which others would build.
Jesus Himself is presented as the ultimate builder. In Matthew 16:18, He declares, "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church." The Church—God's people—is Christ's building project, constructed throughout history as believers are added and sanctified. In Ephesians 2:19-22, Paul describes how believers are "being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit." Each Christian contributes to this spiritual construction through their faith and obedience.
Building in Our Daily Faith
As followers of Christ, we are all builders in some sense. Whether in our families, workplaces, churches, or communities, we're called to build others up through encouragement and faithful witness. In 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Paul urges us: "Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing." This building happens through prayer, service, and sharing the gospel.
Our work—whether literal or spiritual—matters to God. When we labor with integrity, creativity, and faith, recognizing our gifts come from God, we participate in His kingdom work. As you go about your responsibilities this week, remember: you are building something eternal. Your faithfulness, your encouragement of others, your witness to Christ—these are stones being laid in God's great building project. May we build with wisdom, knowing that our labor in the Lord is never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).
"By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care." — 1 Corinthians 3:10
