Divine Judgment and Power

In 2 Kings 6:17, when the prophet Elisha's servant feared the Syrian army surrounding them, Elisha prayed, "Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha" (KJV). While not literally fiery bolts, this vision of divine protection through fire demonstrates how God marshals His power on behalf of His people.
The psalmist celebrates this protective dimension, declaring in Psalm 144:6, "Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them" (KJV). Here, the fiery manifestations of God's power become shields for the righteous, weapons wielded against enemies of God's kingdom. This gives us confidence that when we stand with the Lord, His power—terrible as it may be to His enemies—becomes our defense.

What does the imagery of fiery bolts mean for believers in modern Canada? First, it reminds us that God is not a distant, impersonal force but an active, powerful God who cares deeply about justice and righteousness. When we witness injustice in our world, we can trust that God's judgment is coming. Second, we're called to align ourselves with God's purposes rather than oppose them. The same power that brings judgment to the unrepentant brings protection to the faithful.
As Christians, we're invited to cooperate with God's will through prayer and obedience. We need not fear the fiery bolts of God's judgment if we've yielded our lives to Him through Christ. Instead, we can rest in His protection and power, knowing that nothing falls outside His sovereign control—not the weather, not world events, not our circumstances.
