GO'PHER-WOOD. The ark was constructed of this material. Gen 6:14. There are many theories as to what gopher-wood was. One is that it was some resinous wood, such as cedar, pine, or fir. Still more probable is the opinion that it was cypress, which was considered by the ancients as the most durable wood, and least exposed to worms and natural decay. It abounded in Syria, was used very commonly for shipbuilding, and was almost the only wood which could furnish suitable timber for so large a vessel as the ark. GO'SHEN. The portion of Egypt assigned to Israel.
Gen 45:5, Gen 45:10; Gen 46:28; Gen 47:27-50:8. It probably bordered on the Tanitic branch of the Nile, hence called Zoan or Tauis, Ps 78:12, and reached from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea. It was suited to shepherds, abounded in vegetables. It contained the treasure-cities Rameses and Pithom, Goshen was near the royal capital. Gen 48:1-2; Ex 5:20; appears to have been the starting place of the Israelites in their journey to the Land of Promise. Ex 12:37-38. A district in Palestine, perhaps between Gibeon and Gaza.
