Beauty as God's Gift and Design
When we open the pages of Scripture, we encounter a God who creates with intention and artistry. In Genesis 1, as God surveys His creation—the mountains, oceans, and sky—He declares it all "good" (Genesis 1:25). This goodness encompasses aesthetic beauty. The Psalmist captures this wonder perfectly: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands" (Psalm 19:1). God Himself is described as clothed in splendor and majesty (Psalm 104:1), and we are invited to contemplate His beautiful creation as a pathway to knowing Him more deeply.
God has also blessed humanity with the capacity to create beauty. The craftsmen who built the Tabernacle were filled with the Spirit of God to do "all kinds of artistic designs" (Exodus 35:31). We see this divine creative spark reflected in music, art, architecture, and nature throughout Scripture. These expressions of beauty are not frivolous—they are gifts that help us worship and appreciate our Creator's handiwork.
The Warning Against Superficial Beauty
Yet Scripture offers us a crucial counterbalance. While beauty is a gift, the Bible consistently cautions us against making it an idol. First Peter 3:3-4 offers tender counsel to believers: "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment... Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." This isn't a rejection of physical care, but a reordering of priorities.
Proverbs speaks directly to this tension: "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised" (Proverbs 31:30). The book of Proverbs repeatedly reminds us that true attractiveness flows from wisdom, kindness, and character. Even in the Old Testament, we see this principle illustrated. When Samuel was sent to anoint a new king, he initially chose based on appearance, but God corrected him: "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7).
Living with Balanced Appreciation
As followers of Christ, we're called to a balanced perspective on beauty. We can genuinely enjoy and create beauty in our homes, worship, and communities—this honors God's example. We can care for our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Yet we must ensure our primary pursuit is spiritual beauty: developing fruit of the Spirit like love, patience, and kindness (Galatians 5:22-23).
In our Canadian culture that often elevates external appearance, we have a prophetic opportunity to model something different. When believers radiate joy, demonstrate genuine love, and live with integrity, we become truly beautiful—the kind of beauty that reflects Jesus Himself and draws others toward Him. This is the beauty that lasts forever.
