Introduction: The Battle You Cannot See
Most Christians live as if there is no war. They wake up, go to work, scroll social media, and go to bed. But Scripture paints a different picture. Ephesians 6:12 (ESV) warns, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
You are not fighting against your coworker, your spouse, or your difficult neighbor. Your true enemy is spiritual. And God has not left you defenseless. He has given you His own armor. This blog will walk through each piece of the armor of God from Ephesians 6:10-18 (ESV) and show you how to put it on daily.
Before the Armor: The Call to Strength
Before Paul lists the armor, he gives a command: Ephesians 6:10 (ESV) says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.”
Notice: the strength is not your own. You cannot white-knuckle your way through spiritual warfare. The power comes from “the Lord” and “his might.” You put on the armor, but He supplies the victory. Pride is the first foothold the enemy uses. Humility—admitting you need God's armor—is the first step to standing firm.
Piece #1: The Belt of Truth
Ephesians 6:14 (ESV) begins, “Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth.”
In Roman armor, the belt held everything together. It secured the breastplate and kept the soldier's garments from tangling his feet. Spiritually, truth is your foundation. John 17:17 (ESV) declares, “Your word is truth.” Without truth, you stumble over lies—lies about God, about yourself, about your circumstances.
Practical Application: Every morning, declare: “God's Word is true. My feelings are not God. I will believe what Scripture says over what I fear.” Reject the father of lies (John 8:44) and strap on truth.
Why the Enemy Fears Truth
Satan's primary weapon is deception. He convinced Eve that God was holding out on her (Genesis 3). He still does. But when you speak truth aloud, lies lose their power. John 8:32 (ESV) promises, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Piece #2: The Breastplate of Righteousness
Ephesians 6:14 (ESV) continues, “...having put on the breastplate of righteousness.”
The breastplate protected the heart, lungs, and vital organs. Spiritually, righteousness protects your heart from accusation. There are two kinds of righteousness: imputed righteousness (the holiness of Christ credited to you by faith) and practical righteousness (living obediently).
You need both. When Satan condemns you—“You are a failure. God cannot use you”—you answer with imputed righteousness: “I am clothed in Christ's righteousness” (2 Corinthians 5:21). When he tempts you to sin, you answer with practical righteousness: “I choose obedience because I love my God.”
Piece #3: The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Ephesians 6:15 (ESV) says, “...and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”
Roman soldiers wore sturdy sandals with nails for traction. Without good shoes, they slipped in battle. Spiritually, the gospel of peace gives you stable footing. You are not fighting for peace—you are fighting from peace. Romans 5:1 (ESV) declares, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
When the enemy attacks, you do not panic. You stand on the finished work of Christ. Your peace is not based on circumstances but on your position in Christ. That stability allows you to advance the gospel even in chaos.
Piece #4: The Shield of Faith
Ephesians 6:16 (ESV) instructs, “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.”
Flaming arrows were dipped in pitch and set on fire. They could destroy a soldier. Your enemy shoots flaming darts: doubts, fears, temptations, accusations, discouragement. Faith is your shield. Not faith in faith—faith in the character and promises of God.
Romans 10:17 (ESV) says, “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” You raise your shield when you speak Scripture back to the enemy. When he says, “God has abandoned you,” you answer with Deuteronomy 31:6: “He will not leave you or forsake you.” The arrow falls.
Piece #5: The Helmet of Salvation
Ephesians 6:17 (ESV) continues, “...and take the helmet of salvation.”
The helmet protects the mind—the control center. Spiritual attacks often target your thoughts: confusion, hopelessness, false doctrine, suicidal ideation. The helmet of salvation is the assurance that you belong to God. 1 Thessalonians 5:8 (ESV) calls it “the hope of salvation.”
When your mind is assaulted, you declare: “I am saved. I am sealed by the Holy Spirit. My name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life.” That hope guards your mind like a helmet guards the skull.
Piece #6: The Sword of the Spirit
Ephesians 6:17 (ESV) finishes, “...and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
All other pieces are defensive. The sword is the only offensive weapon. And notice: it is not just any Bible reading. It is “the word of God”—specific Scriptures wielded at specific moments.
Jesus modeled this in Matthew 4:1-11 (ESV). Each time Satan tempted Him, Jesus answered, “It is written...” and quoted Deuteronomy. He did not argue. He did not debate. He swung the sword of Scripture. You must memorize verses so that when temptation comes, you have a sword in your hand.
Essential Sword Verses to Memorize:
- On temptation: “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful...” (1 Corinthians 10:13)
- On fear: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)
- On identity: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20)
The Final Piece: Prayer
After listing all six pieces, Paul adds the atmosphere of battle: Ephesians 6:18 (ESV) says, “Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.”
Armor without prayer is like a soldier dressed for battle who refuses to speak to his commander. Prayer aligns you with God's strategy. Pray before you fight. Pray during the fight. Pray after the fight. Pray for other believers too—they are on the same battlefield.
Putting It On: A Morning Prayer of Armor
Every morning, pray this aloud:
“Lord, I put on the belt of truth. I reject all lies. I put on the breastplate of righteousness—I am covered by Christ's blood and choose obedience. I put on the shoes of the gospel of peace. I stand stable on Your finished work. I take up the shield of faith to extinguish every flaming arrow. I put on the helmet of salvation—my mind belongs to You. I take the sword of the Spirit, Your Word, which is alive and powerful. And I will pray without ceasing. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
Call to Action: Copy that prayer. Say it every morning for one week. Then comment below: “I put on the armor today.” You are not alone in this battle.
