Study Notes — Matthew 8
6 sectionsMatthew 8 presents Jesus as the compassionate Savior and sovereign Lord, displaying His divine authority over disease, nature, and the demonic realm. Following His sermon on the mountain, Jesus descends to minister to the hurting and broken—a leper, a centurion's servant, Peter's mother-in-law, and the demon-possessed. Through these miracles, Matthew demonstrates that Jesus is not merely a teacher but the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, worthy of absolute trust and submission. The chapter moves from spectacular healing acts to Jesus' call for genuine discipleship, concluding with His dominion over creation itself.
A leper approaches Jesus with remarkable faith, saying, "Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean" (v. 2). His words reveal both belief in Jesus' ability and humble submission to His will. Jesus responds with immediate compassion: He touches the man—a shocking act, since lepers were ceremonially unclean and untouchable—and declares, "I will; be thou clean" (v. 3). The healing is instantaneous. Jesus then instructs him to tell no one but to show himself to the priest and make the offering prescribed by Moses (v. 4). This preserves Jesus' focus on spiritual transformation over mere celebrity status and validates the old covenant law through proper priestly examination.
A Roman centurion—a Gentile officer—humbly requests healing for his paralyzed servant (vv. 5–6). When Jesus offers to come, the centurion's response is extraordinary: he declares himself unworthy and asks Jesus merely to speak the word (v. 8). His reasoning shows profound insight: as a man under authority who commands obedience, he understands that Jesus' word carries absolute power (v. 9). Jesus marvels at this faith—the only time in Scripture He "marvels"—and pronounces it superior to any faith found in Israel (v. 10). Verses 11–12 expand this theme: many Gentiles will enter the kingdom, while some of Abraham's descendants will be cast into darkness. This challenges Jewish assumptions about privilege and emphasizes that faith, not ethnicity, determines standing before God. The servant is healed in that very hour (v. 13), confirming the power of Jesus' spoken word.
Jesus heals Peter's mother-in-law of a fever by touching her hand (vv. 14–15); she immediately rises to serve, illustrating how genuine healing produces gratitude and active faith. That evening, multitudes with illnesses and demonic afflictions come, and Jesus heals all of them (v. 16). Matthew explicitly connects this to Isaiah 53:4—"Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses" (v. 17)—proving that Jesus' healing ministry fulfills messianic prophecy. His compassion is not incidental; it is the redemptive work of the promised Messiah.
Jesus moves to depart, but two would-be disciples reveal unworthy motives (vv. 19–22). A scribe promises to follow anywhere, but Jesus warns that the Son of Man has no earthly home—true discipleship requires sacrifice. Another disciple asks to bury his father first, but Jesus insists, "Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead" (v. 22). Jesus calls for absolute priority and present obedience.
A violent storm terrifies the disciples while Jesus sleeps (vv. 23–24). When awakened, Jesus rebukes them for little faith, then commands the winds and sea—which obey Him (vv. 25–27). Later, He meets two demon-possessed men and casts out spirits into swine, which rush into the sea and perish (vv. 28–32). The townspeople, more concerned with economic loss than deliverance, beg Jesus to leave (vv. 33–34).
Matthew 8 invites us to test our own faith. Do we believe Jesus can help, but doubt His willingness? Do we grasp His authority over our circumstances? True discipleship demands surrendering our agendas, trusting His word, and prioritizing His kingdom above all earthly concerns. When storms arise—physical, emotional, or spiritual—we can rest knowing that Jesus is Lord.
