Study Notes — Matthew 19
8 sectionsMatthew 19 presents Jesus at a pivotal moment in His ministry, moving from Galilee toward Jerusalem and the cross. Throughout this chapter, Christ addresses three major themes that strike at the heart of discipleship: the permanence and sacredness of marriage, the cost of following Him, and the danger of earthly wealth. Each encounter—with the Pharisees, with children, and with the rich young man—reveals what it means to truly submit to God's kingdom rather than to human compromise, pride, or materialism.
After completing His teaching in Galilee, Jesus moves into Judaea beyond the Jordan River, drawing great multitudes who come seeking healing. This relocation marks a significant phase of His public ministry as He travels toward the final events of His earthly life. The ongoing miracles demonstrate that Jesus' power and compassion never diminish; He remains fully present to those who come to Him, regardless of location or circumstance.
The Pharisees attempt to trap Jesus by asking whether divorce is lawful "for every cause." Rather than debating Mosaic law, Jesus redirects them to God's original design at creation (Genesis 1:27 and 2:24). He emphasizes that marriage is a divine union—God Himself joins husband and wife into one flesh. When Moses permitted divorce, he was accommodating human sinfulness, not endorsing God's ideal. Jesus teaches that divorce is permissible only in cases of fornication (sexual immorality), and remarriage after unlawful divorce constitutes adultery. This teaching upholds marriage as a sacred covenant reflecting God's commitment to His people.
The disciples struggle with Jesus' strict teaching, suggesting it might be better not to marry at all. Jesus responds that not everyone is called to celibacy—some are born unable to marry, some are made unable by others, and some choose celibacy for kingdom purposes. However, this calling is a gift given by God, not a path to spiritual superiority. Both marriage and celibacy can be lived faithfully for Christ's sake.
When disciples attempt to prevent children from approaching Jesus, He rebukes them. The kingdom of heaven belongs to those with childlike faith—humble, trusting, and free from pretense. Jesus physically blesses these little ones, modeling that no one is too insignificant for God's attention and love.
A wealthy young man asks what he must do to gain eternal life. Jesus directs him to keep the commandments, which the man claims he has done. Yet Jesus identifies his true obstacle: attachment to riches. When told to sell everything, give to the poor, and follow Him, the young man departs sorrowfully. His possessions have become his god, preventing him from trusting Jesus absolutely.
Jesus teaches that wealth creates spiritual danger: it is harder for a rich person to enter God's kingdom than for a camel to pass through a needle's eye. When the disciples ask in alarm who can be saved, Jesus assures them that salvation is impossible by human effort alone, but all things are possible with God. His grace, not our merit or resources, saves us.
Peter notes that the disciples have forsaken everything to follow Jesus. Christ promises them a place of honor in the coming kingdom, and assures all believers that whatever is left behind for His sake will be repaid a hundredfold with eternal life. Yet He warns that earthly status means nothing—many who are first will be last, and the last first.
Matthew 19 calls us to examine our priorities: Do we honor God's design for covenant relationships? Are we willing to surrender what the world values most—wealth, status, comfort—for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ? True discipleship requires trusting God's grace rather than our own achievement, and valuing His kingdom above all earthly gain.
