Study Notes — Mark 5
7 sectionsMark chapter 5 presents three powerful demonstrations of Jesus's authority over the spiritual realm, human affliction, and death itself. Beginning with the dramatic deliverance of a demon-possessed man in the Gadarenes region, the chapter moves to the healing of a chronically ill woman and culminates in the resurrection of a young girl. Each account reveals Christ's compassion, the transformative power of faith, and His supremacy over every force that opposes human wholeness and redemption.
Jesus and His disciples have crossed the Sea of Galilee and landed in the region of the Gadarenes. Immediately they encounter a man living among the tombs who is possessed by an unclean spirit. The description is harrowing: he cannot be restrained by chains or fetters, he roams the mountains and tombs day and night, and he cuts himself with stones. This man represents the utter powerlessness of human effort to manage spiritual bondage. No earthly means—physical restraint, social isolation, or human intervention—can liberate him. The tombs symbolize spiritual death; he is already living among the dead.
Application: Sin and demonic oppression reduce a person to spiritual slavery. The world offers only temporary solutions, but only Christ can truly set the captive free.
When the demoniac sees Jesus from a distance, he runs and worships Him—a striking paradox showing that even demons recognize Jesus's authority. The unclean spirit cries out, "What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God?" (v. 7). Note the spirit's knowledge of Christ's identity and its fear of torment. Jesus commands the spirit to depart, then asks for its name. The reply—"Legion"—indicates a multitude of demons (a Roman legion numbered around 6,000 soldiers). The name underscores the severity of the man's condition and the magnitude of Jesus's power.
Application: Spiritual forces recognize Christ's identity even when people do not. No matter how complex or overwhelming our spiritual struggles, Christ's authority is absolute.
The demons beg Jesus not to send them out of the country (v. 10) and instead request permission to enter a nearby herd of swine. Jesus grants this request, and the demons rush into approximately two thousand swine, which then violently rush down a steep place into the sea and drown. This episode is often debated theologically. Jesus's permission reveals His sovereignty—even demons operate within His allowance—while the destruction of the swine demonstrates the destructive nature of demonic influence and validates the reality of the exorcism.
Application: Evil's destructive power is real, but it remains subordinate to Christ's will. Where demons go, destruction follows.
The swineherds report the events, and the townspeople come to witness the transformed man: now sitting, clothed, and in his right mind (v. 15). Despite witnessing this miraculous restoration, the people fear and ask Jesus to leave (v. 17). In contrast, the healed man begs to follow Jesus. Jesus refuses but commands him to remain and testify to his community about "how great things the Lord hath done for thee" (v. 19). The man obeys, publishing throughout the Decapolis (ten Greek cities) and bringing amazement wherever he goes.
Application: Sometimes people reject Christ's work out of fear or spiritual blindness. Our calling is to be faithful witnesses, not to force belief. Personal testimony of God's mercy is powerful evangelism.
Returning to the western shore, Jesus encounters Jairus, a synagogue ruler, whose twelve-year-old daughter is dying. As Jesus proceeds to the house, a woman with a twelve-year bleeding issue touches His garment in the crowd, immediately experiencing healing (v. 29). Jesus stops and identifies her, affirming that "thy faith hath made thee whole" (v. 34). This woman's quiet, desperate faith contrasts with Jairus's public, formal request. Both are honored; both receive mercy.
Application: Faith takes many forms. Whether bold or timid, public or private, genuine faith in Christ's power and compassion brings healing and wholeness.
Upon reaching Jairus's house, Jesus learns the daughter has died. He tells Jairus, "Be not afraid, only believe" (v. 36), and enters the house with Peter, James, and John. Speaking Aramaic—"Talitha cumi" (v. 41)—He raises the girl to life. The witnesses are astonished beyond measure.
Application: When death itself yields to Christ's command, there is nothing beyond His reach. Trust in Him transcends every earthly catastrophe.
Mark 5 calls believers to recognize Christ's absolute authority over spiritual darkness, chronic suffering, and death. Whether we struggle
