4 I know what I will do, so that after my removal from management, people will welcome me into their homes.’

8 The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the sons of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the sons of light.

9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to make friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, they will welcome you into eternal dwellings.

11 So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth, who will entrust you with true riches?

13 No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

5 sectionsLuke 16 presents Jesus teaching about money, faithfulness, and the eternal consequences of our choices. Through parables and direct instruction, Jesus challenges His disciples and the watching Pharisees to recognize that true wealth is found in God alone, not in earthly possessions. The chapter moves from the parable of the unjust steward—teaching shrewd stewardship of resources—to the hard reality of eternity illustrated in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. Throughout, Jesus emphasizes that how we handle money reflects our spiritual condition and determines our eternal destiny.
Jesus tells of a wealthy man's steward accused of wasting his master's goods (vv. 1–3). Facing dismissal, the steward acts shrewdly: he reduces his master's debtors' bills, securing their friendship before losing his position (vv. 4–7). Surprisingly, the master commends this dishonest steward's wisdom—not his dishonesty, but his foresight and decisive action (v. 8). Jesus then applies the lesson: worldly people are often more strategic about their futures than believers are about spiritual matters (v. 8b). The call is clear: use earthly wealth to build eternal friendships and secure your future with God (v. 9).
Verses 10–12 reinforce the principle: faithfulness in small things leads to greater responsibility; unfaithfulness in small things reveals unfaithfulness in character. If we cannot be trusted with "unrighteous mammon" (money), we cannot be trusted with true spiritual riches. This is not merely about financial honesty—it is about recognizing that God tests our hearts through material stewardship.
Jesus declares the fundamental truth: no servant can serve two masters (v. 13). You will love one and hate the other. This applies directly to God and money: you cannot serve both. Money becomes a false master that competes with God for our hearts. The watching Pharisees, who loved money (v. 14), ridiculed Jesus—but He confronted them directly: they justify themselves before people, yet God knows their hearts (v. 15). What people admire as success and security is often an abomination to God when it reflects greed and self-righteousness.
Jesus notes that the Law and Prophets were the revelation until John the Baptist; now the kingdom of God is preached, and people press into it (vv. 16–17). Yet not one letter of the Law fails (v. 17)—its moral demands remain absolute. To illustrate: divorce and remarriage constitute adultery (v. 18). This shows that the kingdom does not abolish God's standards; it heightens them. Our hearts, not just our outward compliance, must align with God's design.
Jesus contrasts a rich man clothed in luxury with Lazarus, a beggar at his gate (vv. 19–21). Both die; Lazarus is comforted in Abraham's bosom while the rich man experiences torment in hell (vv. 22–24). The rich man's plea for relief and for Lazarus to warn his brothers is denied: Abraham explains the reversal of fortunes reflects earthly choices and spiritual condition (v. 25). A great, unbridgeable gulf separates the saved from the lost (v. 26). Finally, Abraham declares that if people will not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they repent even if someone rose from the dead (v. 31)—a sobering reminder that rejection of Scripture reflects a hardened heart.
Luke 16 calls believers to radical honesty about money. Are we serving God or mammon? Do we use our resources wisely for eternal purposes, or do we hoard them selfishly? Most critically, this chapter reminds us that our eternal destiny is not negotiable and cannot be changed after death. Now is the time to align our hearts with God's kingdom, to hear His Word, and to steward all He has given us—including money—for His glory and eternity's sake.
