Study Notes — John 21
7 sectionsJohn 21 records the risen Jesus's appearance to His disciples at the Sea of Galilee and contains some of the most tender and important moments in all of Scripture. After a fruitless night of fishing, the disciples encounter their risen Lord, who miraculously fills their nets and restores them with a meal of bread and fish. The chapter's central focus is Jesus's threefold restoration of Peter after his denial, commissioning him to shepherd His flock and calling him to faithful suffering and martyrdom. This final chapter affirms the physical reality of Christ's resurrection, the tender care of the Shepherd for His sheep, and the cost of true discipleship.
The chapter opens with seven disciples gathered at the Sea of Tiberias (another name for the Sea of Galilee). Peter, perhaps restless and uncertain of his future after denying Jesus, announces he is returning to his old trade of fishing. The others join him, but their labor through the night proves fruitless. This scene reflects the disciples' struggle to know what comes next; they have encountered the risen Jesus multiple times (verse 14), yet they have not yet received the Great Commission or the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Their emptiness—catching nothing—prefigures their desperate need for Christ's direction and power.
At dawn, the risen Jesus stands on the shore, though the disciples do not recognize Him. His simple question—"Children, have ye any meat?"—opens the door to one of Scripture's most beautiful acts of grace. When they obey His instruction to cast their net on the right side, they are overwhelmed by 153 large fish (verse 11), yet the net does not break. John, "the disciple whom Jesus loved," recognizes the Lord first; Peter's impulsive love drives him to plunge into the sea. On the shore, Jesus has already prepared a meal of bread and fish, waiting to feed them. This miracle echoes His feeding of the five thousand and assures the disciples of His abiding care and provision. The specificity of "153 fishes" has prompted much commentary; most likely it emphasizes that every fish was accounted for under Christ's sovereign knowledge and care.
Jesus personally distributes the bread and fish to His disciples in an intimate, covenant meal. No one dares ask His identity—they know it is the Lord. This third post-resurrection appearance (verse 14) reinforces that Jesus rose bodily, eaten real food, and walked and spoke with His followers. The physical reality of the Resurrection is central to apostolic faith and remains foundational to our hope.
After breakfast, Jesus addresses Peter directly by his birth name, "Simon, son of Jonas." Three times He asks, "Lovest thou me?"—paralleling Peter's three denials. Each time Peter affirms his love, and each time Jesus gives him the commission: "Feed my lambs" and "Feed my sheep." Jesus is not asking whether Peter loves Him more than the other disciples (the competitive edge in verse 15 may reflect Peter's earlier boasting). Rather, He is inviting Peter to prove his love through faithful shepherding of God's flock. This restoration is both personal healing and public commissioning.
Jesus prophesies Peter's future martyrdom in poetic language: as a young man, Peter girded himself and walked freely; as an old man, others will gird him and lead him where he does not wish to go. Church tradition affirms Peter was crucified under Nero, possibly upside down. When Peter asks about John's fate, Jesus redirects him: "What is that to thee? follow thou me." Each disciple has his own calling and cross; comparison and curiosity about others' paths distract from obedience to Christ.
A rumor circulates that John will not die, but John himself clarifies Jesus never said this—only that His will regarding John's future was His alone to determine. The chapter concludes by identifying John as the author of this Gospel and affirming his truthful testimony. The final verse humbly acknowledges that Jesus did far more than what has been written.
Like Peter, we may fail, doubt, and stumble—yet Christ offers restoration and renewed purpose, not condemnation. He invites us to love Him and serve His church faithfully, whatever our personal cost. Our calling is not to compare ourselves with other believers or worry about their paths, but to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. The risen Christ still nourishes and commissions His flock today.
